Chitra Pournami: The Festival of reflection

Chitra Pournami: The Festival of reflection

Once every year, on the auspicious night of the full moon in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April–May), a lovely and spiritually rich festival called Chitra Pournami is celebrated.

The significance of Chitra Pournami.

Chitra Pournami isn't about rituals alone, it's a day of self-reflection, gratitude, and renewal. This day of the full moon is set aside for worship of Lord Chitra Gupta, the heavenly accountant who keeps tab on all human beings' good and bad activities.

He is under the god of death and justice, Yama Dharma Raja, and his purpose is not to punish, but to awaken the souls to their karmic account. He tells us that we cannot get rid of bad karma, but we always have the opportunity to cleanse ourselves, rectify our ways, and strive for a good soul.

The Story Behind Chitra Pournami.

There is a poignant legend that is usually narrated on this day. A long time ago, there was an old lady who was famous for her infinite punya (good deeds). Unfortunately, however, her son was the exact opposite: selfish, cruel and steeped in bad karma.

The lady, grief stricken, spent her last days praying and fasting for her son's transformation, dedicating her devotion to Chitra Gupta on Chitra Pournami. When she died, Chitra Gupta, touched by her petitions, also decided to step in. He came down to the world dressed as an old man and went up to the son and asked for water, stating, "I am very thirsty."

The cold and selfish son disregarded the old man. But the old man did not give up and asked, "Please make a pond here, many like me are thirsty." Reluctantly and solely in order to make the constant ask by the old man, the son felt he should created a pond. He did it without interest, but because of the constant ask of the Old man.

After a little while, the son passed away and his soul was conveyed to the court of Yama Dharma Raja. Chitra Gupta stood forth and spoke to the soul:

"When you are asked by Yama which do you prefer, heaven (swarg) or hell (narag), respond with heaven."

Yama checked the balance of karma:

Lots of evil deeds,
Few good things.

Three days' worth of heaven time gained by excavating the pond.

As per Chitra Gupta's suggestion, the soul requested to proceed to heaven first.

But here's where divine magic came into play: While it rained on Earth, the pond got filled with water and innumerable creatures animals, birds, insects sipped from it, satisfying their thirst.

Each sip they took became an extra punya accounted to the son. By the third day, the good deeds of the son had overcome the bad ones and he was permitted to remain in heaven forever.

Lesson from Chitra Pournami Fasting

Chitra Gupta doesn't wipe out your bad karma but he gives you directions to cleanse your heart and take actions that shift your karmic balance to the positive.
